(Grade 2 Art)

This week, our Grade 2 students explored a fun and creative water colour project. Students used drawing and painting techniques to create colourful winter tree compositions.

Students began by sketching tree trunks and branches with black markers, experimenting with different kinds of lines and shapes to make each tree unique. Then, using liquid watercolors, they added wintery colours around their trees. This combination of bold marker lines and soft washes of colour allowed them to explore how different art materials interact and express mood and season.

Art experiences like this help students build confidence in their creativity and develop important skills in observation, coordination, and artistic decision-making.

We are busy authors, editors, and illustrators during writer's workshop! We have started our writer's workshop in grade 2 and the students are so excited about their work. Here are the steps we follow; ask your child about each of these steps:

                                        

January 12th - 16th

 

Learning Intentions:

- Students examine major physical regions of Canada

I Can:

- locate places in Canada by using a map or globe

- describe relative locations

- Compare physical regions in Canada

We have been learning lots about Canada in grade two! We have learned that Canada is made up of 10 provinces, 3 territories and 7 different regions that each have a variety of physical features and landforms. Working together with a partner we used loose parts to represent our understanding and labelled the different regions in our creations.

January 5th - 9th

This week in math we spent some time exploring and analyzing 2D shapes. We reviewed the names of many different shapes and talked about their geometric attributes. 

Learning Intention: 

Geometry - Shapes are defined and related by geometric attributes

I Can:

- sort shapes according to two geometric attributes and describe the sorting rule.

- create a picture or design with shapes 

We made our own attributes charts...

We also had lots of fun exploring and sorting shapes based on their different attributes such as colour, size, thickness, as well as their number of sides or vertices.

After sorting the shapes we created shape pictures using pastels and the art technique of overlapping. We had to really focus and remember that in each overlapping space we had to use a different colour!
